The Northwest Solid Waste Management Facility (Main Landfill) takes most types of waste and recycling from both residents and commercial businesses, with some exceptions. All size trailers are welcomed at this location.

Qualified property owners and residents of homes that pay the annual solid waste disposal assessment through their property taxes may dispose of up to 2,000 pounds of household waste per year for free, excluding the below-listed items.  Examples of household waste that are included in the free 2,000-pound allowance are bagged kitchen and bathroom trash, clothing, bedding, packaging, electronics, yard trimmings, indoor furniture, appliances and small quantities of construction debris from indoor DIY projects (drywall, tile, carpet). Property owners and residents must bring the waste in themselves and show proof of ownership/residency to qualify.

The following items are NOT included in the 2,000-pound allowance and will be charged tipping fees for disposal of these items:

• Tires
• Commercial Waste
• Land clearing debris
• Automobile parts of any kind (whole automobiles are not accepted)
• Fencing, pallets, wooden stairs, decking
• Pools, spas and all related accessories (liners, pumps, etc.)
• Outdoor structures (sheds, dog houses, chicken coops, patios, roofing, etc.)
• Outdoor items such as lawn ornaments, patio chairs, tables, etc.
• External construction debris including demolition and roofing materials
• This list is not all-inclusive. Additional items may require a charge.

• Paper including magazines, newspapers, paper, junk mail, shredded paper (in paper bags, not loose)
• Cardboard including cereal boxes, soda boxes, pizza boxes, corrugated boxes
• Aluminum and tin (steel) including soda cans and canned vegetables
• Rigid plastic containers including milk, soda, water, cooking oil, salad dressing, shampoo, and laundry detergent containers. Chemical containers must be empty and rinsed

Do NOT Mix Recycling with Trash. Recycling must be free of food waste, trash, plastic bags or any material not listed above.

Residential Household Hazardous Waste

• Paint - up to five gallons per month
• Used oil – up to five gallons per month
• Fluorescent bulbs/PCB ballasts up to four feet long
• Automotive or rechargeable batteries
• Mercury Thermostats and Switches (Main Landfill only)
• Chemicals such as pesticides, pool chemicals, cleaning chemicals, solvents (Main Landfill Only)
• Automotive fluids – fuel, antifreeze, gas, brake fluid, transmission fluid (Main Landfill Only)
• Only small quantities of residential household hazardous waste are accepted.  Hernando County cannot accept any commercial hazardous waste

Used Sharps and Unwanted Medications

• Syringes and lancets and unwanted non-narcotic medications are accepted at all locations

Metal

• Bicycles, lawn mowers, grills, shelving, tin roofing, etc., free of gas and oil, are accepted at all facilities

The West Hernando Convenience Center is for residential use only by property owners and residents of homes that pay the annual solid waste disposal assessment through their property taxes.  To use this facility, property owners and residents must bring the waste in themselves and show proof of ownership/residency of a qualified property. Commercial waste is NOT accepted at this location. 

LIMITATIONS

This facility has strict limits as to the size of loads, type of material and number of visits allowed. Quantities over 100 cubic feet and all commercial material must be taken to the Northwest Solid Waste Management Facility (Main Landfill).  

• In order to provide service to a large number of residents, residents are limited to one trip per day regardless of the number of properties owned.
• Residents may only use the convenience center with a trailer five times within a calendar year.
• Trailers must be less that 5 feet wide, 10 feet long and 2 feet high.
• All oversize vehicles and trailers, including dump trucks/trailers, moving vans, etc., are prohibited from using the convenience center.
• Bring sufficient help for unloading; team members do not assist with unloading items.

To reduce unload times and traffic congestion, residents that have small loads (equivalent to 3-4 recycle bins) of loose items must have them containerized/bundled. All loads of loose debris, all larger loads, and large items exceeding 10 cubic feet must use the Northwest Solid Waste Management Facility.
